Obama remembers Sept. 11 with moment of silence
The U.S. president, Barack Obama, and his wife, Michelle, held on Tuesday (11) a minute of silence at the White House lawn to commemorate the victims of the attacks of 11 September, completing 11 years today.
The moment of tribute to the victims of those attacks occurred at 8:46 a.m. (local time, 9:46 a.m. GMT) time that, on September 11, 2001, the American Airlines plane coming from Boston crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center, in New York.
The attacks, which caused more than 3,000 deaths and injuries, the U.S. led the invasion of Afghanistan, where Al Qaeda organization had its base, and the longest war in its history.
After the tribute, the president attended a ceremony at the Pentagon, also in Washington, one of the places hit by the attacks of 11 years ago.
In full fervor of the presidential campaign, Obama made a speech quite restrained and even short for his standards.
