Rescue and recovery from the attack of Sept. 11

The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) quickly ordered 200 units (half of the department) to the site of the attacks, whose efforts were supplemented by several firefighters and paramedics off.  The New York City Police Department (NYPD) sent Emergency Service Units (ESU) and other police officers, along with deploying its aviation unit. Once on the scene, the FDNY, NYPD and Port Authority police have not coordinated efforts  and ended up redundant to conduct research civilians. As conditions deteriorated, the NYPD aviation unit relayed information to the commanders of the firefighters, who issued orders for its personnel to evacuate the towers, so that most of the officers was safely evacuate before the buildings collapsed.  With separate command posts set up, and radio communications between agencies incompatible, the warnings were not passed along to FDNY commanders. After the first tower collapsed commanders sent firefighters evacuation warnings, however, due to technical difficulties with malfunctioning radio repeater systems, many firefighters have not heard the evacuation orders. Within hours of the attack a major search and rescue operation was launched. After months of operations, the site of the World Trade Center was cleared in late May 2002.
